Belagavi: With elections round the corner, police officials and members of election squad raided a government quarters at Vishveshwar Nagar in the city and seized fake currency to the tune of ₹7 crore today. The fake currency included many bundles of ₹2000 and ₹500 notes which were stacked inside the house in different bundles. Although it is believed that the currency was stored by accused Ajit Nidoni from Vijayapura for distribution among voters, the police said, they have arrested the accused and his interrogation is on to know the facts.A team of APMC Police Station also accompanied the squad for a raid on the residential quarters at Vishveshwar Nagar where Ajit Nidoni, a resident of Vijayapura was arrested along with fake currency notes. According to police sources, fake notes were supposed to be mixed with original currency notes of the same value before they were carried to some particular spots for distribution among voters. However, the squad managed to recover fake currency before the accused mixed them with the original ones.

All the notes were of zero denomination and some notes of ₹2000 value were totally white on one side. However, the accused Nidoni has admitted to the police that he was directing a movie and had kept the notes for use in some of the movie sequences. The Belagavi police have launched an investigation into the incident.
