Belagavi: Here is an worrying story for Belgaumites as the town selected under “Smart City” project has turned as the City of Mosquitoes as 281 cases of Dengue disease were found till date this year. However, other places of the district which were known for uncleanliness have only 12 cases.

KLES hospital has treated 127 Dengue patients, Lake View 59 and the Civil hospital attached to Government Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) treated 95 patients. Whereas other hospitals of the district just 9 patients. However, there were possibilities that patients from other places might have taken treatment in Belagavi private hospitals.

Most badly hit localities were Anjaneya nagar, Rukhmini nagar, Ashok nagar, Vantamuri in Belagavi North and Khasbag and Angol in Belagavi South Assembly Constituency. The listed localities having more slum areas where waste water stagnant in the open gutters due to unscientific civil engineering, uncleaned garbage dumping places and other unhygienic reasons.

Why More in North?: Compared to South, North region has more population and wide geographically for which the City Corporation allocated more pourakarmikas and street cleaning workers to the area. However, after last election to assembly, the allocation of the pourakarmikas and cleaning staff shared equally to both south and north for which the number of Dengue cases are more in north.

More Dengue cases were reported in the localities which had more cases in previous year which clearly shows that the City Corporation was not serious about discharging its duty.
