Belagavi: Senior Dalit leader Ashok Inavar died at his residence at Bastawad village at 3 pm on Saturday. He was 68.

Ashok who led several agitations taking the issues belonging to dalits was known as the voice of Dalits and oppressed classes. Because of him, the Bendigeri case agitation spread throughout the state and the accused were dragged to the court. A few upper caste people of Bendigeri village near Belagavi had forcibly made to eat human excreta to five Dalits of the village alleging that they had stolen hay stock kept in the fields.

Ashok was also the founder of Dalit Sangharsha Samiti and through the DSS was fighting against the inequality in society. He was also a strong supporter of Bandaya Sahitya Sanghatene and was participating in all the programs of the organisation. He is survived by a wife and four daughters. His last rites would be performed at Bastawad village on Sunday at 11 am.
